If you've started looking for a wedding photographer, you've probably already discovered something frustrating: pricing is all over the place. One photographer charges $2,000. Another charges $5,000. One gives you six hours. Another gives you ten. Some include an engagement session, second photographer, albums or video. Others don't.So how much should wedding photography cost? The annoying answer is: it depends. But after more than 15 years of photographing and filming weddings throughout the Shenandoah Valley, Northern Virginia, Washington DC and beyond, we can at least help you understand what you're paying for—and what you actually need. What Does Wedding Photography Cost in Virginia? There's no universal price, and you'll see a pretty significant difference depending on where you're getting married.Generally, photographers in the Shenandoah Valley tend to cost less than photographers serving Northern Virginia and Washington, DC. Experience, demand, hours of coverage, number of photographers and what's included can all make a significant difference. You'll find photographers under $2,000. You'll also find established Virginia wedding photographers charging $5,000 or considerably more.Price alone doesn't tell you whether someone is the right photographer for your wedding.Instead, compare what you're actually getting—and who you're trusting with the day.How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Do You Need? This is probably a better question than “Which package should I buy?”For a smaller wedding, six hours may be plenty. You can usually cover the ceremony, portraits and a good portion of the reception.Eight hours works well for many traditional wedding days and usually gives you some getting-ready coverage through the major reception events.Ten hours gives the day room to breathe. Getting ready, first looks, multiple locations, sunset portraits, reception events and everything in between don't have to be squeezed into a photography timeline. At Toy Box Studios, our full-day photography and videography coverage starts at $3,600 and includes up to ten hours. There's a reason we do it that way. We'd rather build our photography around your wedding than build your wedding around our photography. But that doesn't mean everybody needs ten hours. Smaller weddings, shorter celebrations and custom coverage are absolutely options. What Are You Actually Paying a Wedding Photographer For?Yes, you're paying for photographs. But you're also paying for what happens when things don't go according to plan. And things will not always go according to plan. We've seen a tablescape catch fire. We've watched buses get stuck. We've dealt with missing tables, wrong flowers, questionable groomsmen decisions and brides throwing up in the bushes.Somehow, everybody still got married. After hundreds of weddings, you learn when to step in, when to stay out of the way, how to fix a timeline that's falling apart and when something important is about to happen before anyone else notices it.You also learn something even more important:At the end of the day, you're going to be married. That's something I've told couples countless times over the years.Beautiful photographs matter tremendously. But we never want creating them to keep you from actually experiencing your wedding. That's one of the biggest differences experience brings. Is a More Expensive Wedding Photographer Worth It?Sometimes. There are incredibly talented photographers at every price point. Spending more doesn't automatically mean you'll receive better photographs.Experience becomes especially valuable when conditions aren't perfect. Can your photographer handle a dark church where flash isn't allowed? Rain that changes the entire portrait plan? A ceremony running 45 minutes late? Difficult family dynamics? A reception timeline that's completely gone out the window? And just as importantly: Do you actually want this person around you all day? You'll probably spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost any other vendor. We've had couples treat us like “the help,” and we've had couples make us feel like family. We know which weddings we enjoy more.We like working with nice people. People who trust us, listen when we have advice, laugh when things go sideways and understand that we're all working toward the same goal. That relationship matters more than most couples realize when they're comparing packages on a website.Should You Choose a Wedding Photography Package or Custom Coverage? There's nothing wrong with traditional six-, eight- and ten-hour packages. They make comparison shopping easy. But weddings don't always fit neatly into three boxes.A 40-person wedding in the Shenandoah Valley may need something completely different from a cathedral ceremony in Washington, DC followed by a large ballroom reception. That's why our standard Toy Box wedding coverage is designed around the full wedding day, while shorter and custom coverage is available when it makes sense. If you only need six hours, tell us.We'd rather figure out what actually works for your wedding than sell you hours you don't need. So, How Much Should You Spend on Wedding Photography?Spend enough to hire someone whose work you love and whom you trust when things go wrong.Look beyond the number of hours and Instagram highlights. Ask who's actually photographing your wedding. Ask about backup equipment. Ask what happens if your photographer gets sick. Look through complete wedding galleries—not just someone's 30 best photographs. And talk to them.Because ultimately you're not buying ten hours of someone's time. You're trusting someone with your memories of a day you don't get to do over.We take that responsibility pretty seriously.Wondering What Makes Sense for Your Wedding?Toy Box Studios provides wedding photography and videography throughout the Shenandoah Valley, Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Virginia and beyond, with full-day photography or videography coverage starting at $3,600.Planning something smaller? That's okay too.Tell us your date, where you're getting married and a little about what you're planning. We'll check availability and help you figure out what kind of coverage actually makes sense. No pressure. No sales pitch. Just a simple place to start.CHECK YOUR DATE →
